New York, NY (Sports Network) - Oakland Athletics outfielder Eric Byrnes was named the American League Player of the Week for games through August 1.
Byrnes led the league with 22 total bases and tied for the lead with nine runs batted in. He hit .440 in seven games with seven runs scored, three
homers and an .880 slugging percentage.
Other candidates for the honor included New York's Alex Rodriguez, who hit four homers and drove in seven runs with a .346 average; Seattle's Ichiro
Suzuki, who batted .500 with 18 hits; Anaheim's Bartolo Colon, who went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA; and Minnesota's Johan Santana, who was also 2-0 with a
league-high 18 strikeouts.
