Saratoga Springs, NY (Sports Network) - Jockey John Velazquez has recorded his 3,000th career victory with a win in the second race Thursday at
Saratoga Race Course.
The win was aboard Runingforpresident in a six furlong race for maidens.
Velazquez was the leading rider last year at Saratoga when he set a meet record of 61 victories. He has been the leading jockey in New York the last
three calendar years.
This year, Velazquez has earned more than $9 million, which is currently sixth in the nation. The native of Puerto Rico is third in the country in
total wins with 186.
In his career, Velazquez has earned better than $128 million. He began his riding career in Puerto Rico in 1990 and later that year moved to New York.
Immediately after the 32-year-old jockey posted the milestone victory, he came right back to win the third race at Saratoga.
