Benson trade appears imminent

The Minnesota Twins continue to have the most attractive pieces to offer in a Benson trade. Two baseball officials said yesterday that first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, who has been told by Twins management that he will be traded, is not part of the package. The Anaheim Angels also have been mentioned as a potential trading partner, with the Pirates getting first base prospect Casey Kotchman. Baseball officials also said the Atlanta Braves have emerged as a potential suitor for Benson, who graduated from high school in nearby Marietta, Ga. The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets, though, no longer appear to be in the running."

Giants eyeing Urbina

The Chronicle's Henry Schulman reports that Giants GM Brian Sabean was on hand to watch Tigers closer Ugueth Urbina pitch last night. There is also a chance that the Giants will deal for Randy Johnson.

Big Unit could pitch for Yankees on Friday

Record columnist Bob Klapisch writes that the Yankees could get Randy Johnson as part of a three-way deal involving the Padres or Marlins. Word is that Johnson wants a deal to get done quickly so that he can pitch for his new team on Friday.

Mets, Rangers in hunt for Zambrano

While MLB's top cop Bob Watson says his investigation into Saturday's Yankees-Red Sox brawl at Fenway Park isn't complete, Alex Rodriguez believes he is getting suspended. 'Three games is what I hear,' said A-Rod, who insists catcher Jason Varitek started the fracas at home plate after A-Rod was hit by Bronson Arroyo.
