(AP News) - FRENCH police said today they have recovered the body of a 64-year-old man who apparently fell to his death while watching the 16th stage
of the Tour de France, a time trial on the Alpe d'Huez.
The family of the unidentified man, who lived in the Paris area, alerted police to his disappearance after Wednesday's segment of the cycling race,
which saw five-time champion Lance Armstrong extend his lead over his rivals.
A team of gendarmes found the body early today on the side of a local road, 40m below where the man was believed to have been standing.
Medical examiners are expected to conduct an autopsy on Friday.
During today's stage, which also took place in the Alps, a six-year-old boy sustained leg injuries when he was hit by a motorcycle that was part of
the race's large publicity caravan, police said.
