Wimbledon tennis champion Maria Sharapova of Russia and six-time major tournament winner Serena Williams have agreed to take part in the inaugural
China Open tennis tournament in Beijing in September.
Sharapova, who beat Williams Saturday to take the Wimbledon crown, says she is eager to play in China. Williams said she is excited about playing in
front of the Chinese people.
The women's draw also includes China's Zheng Jie and Jelena Dokic of Serbia-Montenegro. The men's draw includes Spain's Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos
Ferrero, Marat Safin of Russia and Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand.
The tournament will be played on hard courts September 10-26 at the Beijing Tennis Center, which is still being built.
