New York, NY (Sports Network) - Texas Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira has been named the American League Player of the Week for games played from
June 28 through July 4.
Teixeira led the AL with five home runs, 11 runs batted in, 10 runs scored and 26 total bases during the week. He batted .385 in seven games, going
10- for-26, with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .467 on-base percentage.
The switch-hitter punctuated his week on July 4 with homers from both sides of the plate, including a grand slam, and a career-high six RBI in an 18-3
victory over Houston.
It was Teixeira's first career player of the week award.
Other candidates for the honor included Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer, who hit an AL-best .526 with three home runs, and Tampa Bay pitcher Victor
Zambrano, who was 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA.
