SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Free agent defenseman Eric Cairns signed with the Florida Panthers on Monday.
Cairns, 30, had two goals and six assists in 72 games with the New York Islanders last season, and his 189 penalty minutes were the most among NHL
defensemen.
In the opening round of the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Cairns had two turnovers that resulted in easy goals in a 3-0 loss in Game 1.
The eventual Stanley Cup champions won the series in five games.
Cairns has nine goals and 31 assists in an eight-year NHL career.
The terms of the deal were not released.
