New York, NY (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Jim Thome was selected as the National League Player of the Week for games played June 14-20.

Thome belted five home runs, including the 400th of his career, in seven games to extend his season total to 23, tops in the majors. Thome's 400th homer came off Cincinnati's Jose Acevedo in a 10-7 Phillies victory on June 14.

Other players nominated included Montreal's Jose Vidro, San Francisco's Edgardo Alfonzo and Jason Schmidt, Colorado's Vinny Castilla, Derrek Lee of the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles' Adrian Beltre, Eric Gagne and Jose Lima, Pittsburgh's Jason Bay, Florida's Carl Pavano and Steve Trachsel of the New York Mets.

Thome is one short of the Phillies record for homers in a month. He has 15 in June with 3 games still to go this month.

Correction. He has 14, the record is 15 by Cy Williams in 1923. Mike Schmidt also hit 14 homers in a month for the Phils.
