INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -The father of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has died from complications of leukemia at the age of 78.
Wilber Dungy, a retired Jackson, Mich., school administrator and teacher, was a frequent visitor to Colts practices since his son became the team's
coach before the 2002 season. He had been undergoing treatment for leukemia the last several months at the Indiana University Medical Center, where he
died Tuesday night.
"They felt like they had it in remission. And then he developed an infection because his blood counts were down,"
Tony Dungy said Wednesday
after the team's minicamp session. "It was so low that his body just couldn't fight it off."
Funeral services were pending in Jackson.
"I guess I just have to look at it as a blessing, being around him for my life and the fact that he was able to be here, especially in his last two
years being around so much,"
Dungy said. "He just set a great example for me. As sad as I am, he wanted me to come out to practice today.
That's just the way he was."
