Wimbledon champion Roger Federer started the defence of his Gerry Weber Open crown in impressive style as he eased to a straight-sets victory over
Swede Thomas Johansson in Halle, Germany. In his first match on grass since his triumph at SW19 last year, the world number one from Switzerland never
looked troubled, winning 6-3 6-2 against Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open champion.
Youzhny took a set off Federer in the semi-finals last year but this time he produced a string of dazzling winners. Federer will face Frenchman Arnaud
Clement in the third round after he beat Germany's Alexander Popp in straight sets 7-6 6-2.
Other winners in Tuesday's first round matches were Fernando Verdasco, Mikhail Youzhny, Andreas Seppi, Joachim Johansson and Nicolas Kiefer.
