NEW YORK (AP) - The Yankees' Derek Jeter overtook Boston's Nomar Garciaparra in voting for the starting American League shortstop in next month's
All-Star game.
Jeter, who slumped for much of the first two months of the season, has 488,815 votes to 479,814 for Garciaparra in totals released Tuesday by the
commissioner's office.
Garciaparra, who has been on the disabled list since the start of the season, is on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket and could be
activated soon.
There were no other changes in position leaders. Two other Yankees are on track to start in the July 13 game at Houston: third baseman Alex Rodriguez
(699,691) and first baseman Jason Giambi (459,475).
Second baseman Alfonso Soriano, traded from New York to Texas in February, leads all major leaguers with 896,631 votes.
Detroit's Ivan Rodriguez (635,248) leads at catcher, and the top three outfielders are Anaheim's Vladimir Guerrero (791,605), and Boston's Manny
Ramirez (760,310) and Johnny Damon (420,939). The Yankees' Gary Sheffield is just behind in fourth at 419,289.
Voting runs through June 23 at most ballparks and June 30 on the Internet, and starters will be announced July 4.
Updated NL totals were released Monday.
