Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has a tight groin and probably won't play again until Tuesday.

New York's captain left Friday night's 7-6 win over Texas in the fourth inning because of tightness in his left groin.

Jeter was injured Thursday when he scored from first base on Gary Sheffield's seventh-inning double against Baltimore. Yankees manager Joe Torre wasn't sure whether to start Jeter on Friday.

Jeter felt the groin tighten after he beat out an infield single in the third and told Torre. When Jeter's spot came up in the fourth, Miguel Cairo pinch-hit for him.

"We spoke before the game," Jeter said of Torre. "He said he was trusting me, and I don't want to lose his trust."

Jeter has raised his average from .189 on May 26 to .233. Torre didn't want to take any chances.

"We didn't want to mess around with it," said Jeter, who had the groin treated with ice for the remainder of the game.

With Jeter out, Cairo went to second base, and Enrique Wilson moved from second to shortstop. Wilson hurt a groin in the fifth while running to first on a ball Hank Blalock misplayed at third base. Torre said Wilson probably won't play Saturday, leaving him with a starting infield of Cairo at shortstop and Homer Bush at second.

With no regular backup infielders, Torre said in an emergency he could use Sheffield at third base or Jorge Posada at second.

"I take ground balls in the infield every day just to stay sharp if needed," Sheffield said.
