Russian ninth seed Elena Dementieva beat Lindsay Davenport to reach the last 8 in Paris on Sunday. Dementieva, whose previous best showing at Roland
Garros was a fourth round exit in 2002, started brightly and romped to the opening set 6-1. She broke early in the next and threatened to walk through
her American opponent, a former semi-finalist. Yet Davenport broke back to level up at 3-3 in the second set, before Dementieva pulled away again. The
Russian, who hit 20 winners in the match and looked impressive doing so, eventually closed out to record a 6-1 6-3 victory.
