Julio Diaz won the IBF lightweight title with a majority decision over Javier Jauregui on Thursday night.
The fight at the San Diego Sports Arena was scored 114-114 on one card and 118-110 in favor of Diaz on the other two.
It was Jauregui's first attempt to defend his lightweight title.
Diaz controlled the early rounds, cutting Jauregui above the right eye in the second.
Jauregui rallied in the seventh through ninth rounds, landing combinations at the end of each that left Diaz's nose bleeding. Jauregui came out
aggressive in the 12th and final round, but a partisan crowd cheered Diaz to victory.
Diaz, 24, of Coachella, Calif., has won six straight fights and improved his record to 30-2 with 22 knockouts. He knocked out Courtney Burton on March
19 to become the No. 1 ranked IBF lightweight contender.
Jauregui, 30, of Mexico, fell to 47-11-2 with 34 knockouts.
Jauregui entered the 135-pound bout at 134 1/4 pounds, while Diaz weighed 134 3/4.
