A member of the U.S. Ski Team's developmental squad died Saturday of head injuries sustained in a crash during a training run earlier in the week.
Shelley Glover, 17, was training at Mount Bachelor Resort in Oregon when she fell and hit her head Wednesday morning, U.S. Ski Team spokesman Tom
Kelly said.
"It was a low- to moderate-speed accident. It wasn't a big downhill crash," Kelly said. "This was not a circumstance where you'd expect something like
this to happen."
Glover was wearing her helmet when she crashed, Kelly said.
Glover died Saturday at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Ore.
In her second year with the developmental squad, Glover placed eighth in the slalom at the U.S. Alpine Championships in Alaska in March, and finished
the season ranked sixth in the NorAm Cup slalom standings.
"She was absolutely tracking toward the Olympic team. If it wasn't '06, it was definitely 2010," Kelly said. "It's a real tragedy."
Glover is believed to be the first member of the U.S. Ski Team to die in training or competition since Jeff Wright was killed in a 1975 ski jumping
accident in Brattleboro, Vt., Kelly said.
"It's very much a loss to our family when something like this happens," he said.
