World number one Justine Henin-Hardenne and Serena Williams will both miss their country's Fed Cup games on 24 and 25 April. The Belgian is out with a low blood-sugar count while Williams withdrew after initially being selected by US captain Zina Garrison.

But Serena's sister Venus will face Slovenia, along with Laura Granville, Lisa Raymond and Martina Navratilova. Defending champions France will be led by Amelie Mauresmo against Germany. Kim Clijsters, who has been struggling with a wrist injury, has been named in the Belgium team to face Croatia on clay.In the other ties, Russia host Australia, Spain play Switzerland, Austria face Slovakia, Japan are up against Argentina while Italy play the Czech Republic. There was some confusion over Williams' reason for withdrawing from the US team. There had been speculation that she had cited a knee injury but this was denied by her publicist.
