Paul Hunter's victory over Steve Davis
at the 597,200 Daily Record Players Championship ensured a star studded quarter-final line-up in Glasgow.Predictions of a fade out by the top
professionals in the last tournament before the World Championship has not materialised.
Only John Higgins and Stephen Lee of the world's top eight have not made it to their allotted places in the draw.People's champion Jimmy White and
Lancastrian Ian McCulloch are the odd men out in the chase for the title and 82,500 first prize on Sunday. There is also the LG Electronics Tour Order
of Merit to be decided which carries another trophy and 50,000 bonus.Hunter and merit leader Ronnie O'Sullivan are the only two players still in
contention for the latter awards. And that makes Friday night's clash between the duo extra special. Hunter needs to beat the 'Rocket' and go on to win
the championship to deny O'Sullivan.Peter Ebdon's match with Mark Williams is a battle between the last two world champions. Ebdon goes into the game
on a seven-match unbeaten run, including his victory in the recent Irish Masters. He knocked out Hendry's compatriot Graeme Dott while world number one
Williams recovered from two down with three to play to beat Irish Masters runner-up Mark King. There is also plenty riding on the remaining
quarter-final between White and McCulloch. Not only are they chasing a place in the penultimate round but both are battling it out for a place in the
top 16 for next season.
