World number one and top seed Roger
Federer was beaten in the third round of the Nasdaq-100 Open by rising Spanish star Rafael Nadal. The 17-year-old Nadal needed just 69 minutes to wrap
up a 6-3 6-3 win and inflict just the second defeat of the year on Wimbledon champion Federer.
He was up against the hottest player in the game, rising star Nadal offered further proof of his undoubted potential by bringing Federer's 12-match
unbeaten run to a screeching halt. The 17-year-old prevailed 6-3 6-3, handing the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion only his second loss
in 25 matches this year. But Nadal, who won the deciding fifth rubber of Spain's Davis Cup tie with the Czech Republic last month over Radek Stepanek,
played down the achievement. The left-handed Spaniard did not face a break point as he took Federer apart with some relentless hitting.Nadal will now
play Chile's Fernando Gonzalez for a place in the last eight.
