Herbie Hide's heavyweight comeback was thrown off the rails on Friday night when he was beaten by little-known Lithuanian Mendauga Kulikauskas. The
32-year-old former world champion had intended to use the bout simply as a warm-up as he once again attempts to join the sport's elite. But any hopes
of another title seem a long way off after he was beaten by technical knockout in Nottingham, leaving plans for a clash with Danny Williams on April
23 up in the air.
Hide's latest comeback began last April and had seen him stop Joseph Chingangu, Derek McCafferty and Alex Vassilev. Those victories followed an
18-month exile following a disappointing defeat by Chingangu. The two-time WBO world champion has now lost four of his 35 professional bouts.
Kulikauskas came in as a late substitute after the British Boxing Board of Control rejected original opponent Rogerio Lobo of Brazil. But things went
badly awry for Hide when a clash of heads midway through the third round left him with a nasty gash to the left eyebrow and the contest was halted
following an inspection by the ringside doctor. The 32-year-old former WBO world champion saw the Williams bout as the next step towards regaining
former glories.
