ESPN is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are close to signing former Cub and free agent Greg Maddox. This would give the Cubs 3 great pitchers in Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, and Maddox. The Cubs lost to the eventual World Series Champion Marlins in 7 games last year.

Is Greg Maddux going back to his old stomping grounds?

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports in Wednesday's editions that, according to a source, the free-agent pitcher is close to an agreement with the Chicago Cubs. In fact, Maddux is expected to be on hand when pitchers and catchers report to the Cubs' spring training practice facility in Mesa, Ariz., on Wednesday.

This would be an unbelievable boost to their pitching staff. Could this be the key to boost the Cubbies to the World Series? Could the Cubbies beat the Yankees with this pitching staff? Only time will tell. The Cubs have to sign him first.

The deal is done, pending a physical.

This is a huge boost to an already good pitching staff. That gives them a solid 5 rotation with Maddux, Wood , Prior, Zambrano, and Clement. The Cubbies should have a good year if they can knock in some runs and help out their top notch pitching staff.

They were only what 4 outs away from going to the world seris last year. And with maddox it should be easier in some sense.

Did they lose any players in the off-season?

All signs point to yes
I'm a magic 8-ball. The curse will be broken this year and good little Sammy will win his first world series. I'll root for the cubs if they get in the playoffs, unless them and the Mariners have to duke it out. Then it's uh oh for them.

I don't see Mariners making playoffs this season...I think Boston or As will get Wild Card while the Angels will nail down the AL West.

Cubs o yes, mariners i dont know about. They are a different team this year.

Ya, the M's have changed their team quite a bit from last year. Yet this doesn't mean it's bad. Cirillo was the number one reason why the offense couldn't produce anything and they got rid of him. I think this is going to be the year that Edgar will finally get his world series win. M's will be better than anyone would ever to have thought of them to be. Mark my words, mark my words

Cubs acquisitions

2B Todd Walker (RedSox)
1B Derek Lee (Marlins)
C Michael Barrett (Expos)
SP Greg Maddux (Braves)
OF Todd Hollandsworth (Marlins)
RP Latroy Hawkins (Twins)
RP Kent Mercker (Braves)
SP Ryan Dempster (Reds)

Should make the Cubs a serious contender this season.

i don't know about the M'sthis year, dumping Cirillo was a big plus, but i don't believe they made the improvements that it will take to catch the angels this year, looks to me like another solid year but again coming up short
