Former champion James Toney has pulled out of his 12-round bout scheduled for February 7 against heavyweight Jameel McCline because of a torn left Achilles' tendon. The 35-year-old suffered the injury while sparring in Los Angeles in preparation for the fight at the Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas.

It is likely that Toney will be sidelined at least three months, and the fight has not been rescheduled as of yet. Toney was using the fight against McCline (30-3-3, 18 KO) as a warmup, hoping to secure a heavyweight title bid or a rematch against Roy Jones, Jr., who beat Toney for the IBF super middleweight belt in November 1994.

James Toney is on course to fight again in summer 2004 following an Achilles tendon operation.Toney, ranked eighth in the IBF's world heavyweight standings, sustained an injury to his left heel while training for a February bout with Jameel McCline. He underwent an operation in late January.

Tipped to fill the vacancy Lennox Lewis left at the top of the game, some feared the injury would put paid to 35-year old Toney's career. Now the former middleweight, super-middleweight and cruiserweight champion is on course for a summer comeback.
