Former NFL head coach of the Buffalo Bills was hired as a defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers yesterday. Phillips agreed to a two-yea contract. Phillips, who turns 56, spent the last year seasons of his career as the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator. He was interim Head Coach for the last tree games after the current head coach Reeves was released of his services. During his interim as head coach his record was 2-1, including a huge victory over the defending super bowl champions.

Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer said that “He (Phillips) has consistently produced a defensive football teams that have been outstanding in producing big plays and sacking the quarterback, he’s got a very broad background in various aspects of defense.”

The Chargers have gotten themselves a big gain with signing Phillips; Phillips was head coach of the Denver Broncos from 1993-94 and for the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000. Wade has also been a defensive coordinator with five teams during his 26-year NFL coaching career, including Atlanta (2002-04), Buffalo (95-97), Denver (89-92), Philadelphia (86-88) and New Orleans (81-85).

I think that the Chargers have just gained a great coach in Phillips wherever he has gone the team has had tremendous success on the defensive side of the ball. The Chargers were awful last season, but with Phillips he will teach this team how to stop the run and pass will getting sacks, and turnovers.
