Quite interesting to see that we've finally paid off out debt to the US.

As for the beginning of WWII, the disastrous policy of appeasement was another way of trying to avoid war... albeit a poor one (understatement). We have, however, learned our lesson and thank goodness we have after a war so bloody coupled with the horrors of the Holocaust and other such atrocities. Appeasement does not work, pure and simple. I suspect someone will pick me up by saying "Well why not invade Iran/Darfur/Fiji/Burma/North Korea/Syria/whatever", and you'd have a point.

I had no idea that there was any serious attempt to avert an escalation of the hostilities after Poland was invaded. I was aware of the lack of action during the phoney war but thought that was a result primarily of French military doctrine(i.e. the maginot line).
