Last month, at a conference at Cambridge, de Grey told some leading gerontologists there is no reason why humans cannot live for 1000 years. He
named seven cellular, molecular and genetic calamities that add up to a worn-out body — then offered a cure.
Harvard Professor Ronald Kahn told the conference how he and a team of 15 had found an anti-ageing gene in mice. Called the Klotho gene, after the
Greek goddess who spins life's thread, its stimulation led to mice living 30 per cent longer, Kahn said.
In comparison, de Grey's claims seemed outlandish, although they were modest by his usual standard. The self-taught gerontologist has spoken of
people living for 5000 years. He travels constantly to Europe and the US, attending and often starring at anti-ageing and immortality
conferences.

If their were cures for the things that cause the human body to deteriorate in later years, why not?
I don't know if I would want to live to be that old, though.
But in the bible there are many references to persons who are hundreds of years old.
Not that I believe the entire bible per se, just poiting it out.

1000 wow, It would not bother me, all the knolege I would get, and today we live what 80 years, not enough to get really smart, wise like.
I would never get bored, as long as there is something to learn.
If we would get to live 1000 I think wars would also go away, life would become something of greater value, no one would risk 1000 years just to
participate in a war as a soldier.
I wonder how wise a man would be after 1000 years.

I remember watching a program on National Geographic about things relating to comic book charecters like how wolverine heals etc.. geeky.. but i was
shocked.. that most things that seem logical a comic book charecter can do is possible.. funny that.. anyway!
There was a little thing about how human body's can handle 500 years or so of wear 'n tear, but there some little problem with a "Biological
Clock"
Like you find a mate, have kids, grow, old, then it turns off and you die etc.. etc.. odd theory.. maybe t'is true?

alimony to 200 of those! Man I wish I would die LOL" From 5000 year old man.

Interesting topic, I don’t disbelieve it could happen. After all there is a genetic condition which sadly speeds up the process of ageing called
Progeria.
Personally I would like to live for a thousand years don’t think I would get bored at all. What is old people say so often "life is to short"
among many others. Of course it wouldn’t exactly be the most idealistic of situations here on earth, because of the population growth.
But for deep space exploration it would be perfect.

After reading this thread all I could think was that I would retire at the age of 900 and my 401K retirement plan would be worth 485 billion dollars

living that long would be positively glorious, one can only do so much good with the time he has, but if he has forever... the possibilities are
endless

There's a great Heinlein book about a man who lives a thousand years and all the implications of living that long, its called Time Enough for
Love. All the ideas brought up in this thread about living a looong time are dealt with, and its a killer sci-fi read. I hope this isn't off
topic... Because seriously, if you are very interested in this topic from the philosophically end check this book out.

Funny… I guess the cosmetics industry will be flourishing in the year 3006…
Of course the operative word in anti-aging techniques is ANTI-AGING... as in not growing old at all and possibly even reversing aging to the perfect
form.
Some would say that this is not possible and even some would say they wouldn't want to live longer than our current life span.
Personally, I would want to live for as long as possible. I enjoy life very much and I can't image there is enough time in an average life span to do
all the things I want to do and to see all the things I want to see.
Here are a couple of my threads you may find interesting.
A Global Pandemic of the Positive Kind.
Experts crack cancer 'gene codes'
I think life extension is happening whether people realise it or not and I don't believe this technology will be the preserve of the rich or
powerful. I think it is a natural progression of the human species.
We are the lucky few that really do have a chance to life for a virtual ever.
Picture this... you are 30 years old now and have a life expectancy of 80 years. 20 years passes by and new drugs and techniques pass clinical trials
and extends humans life 30%...
At this time you are obviously 50 with a life expectancy of 104
Then in 10 years time new discoveries lead to a further life extension of 30% longer still... At this time you are 60... your life expectancy is now
135.2 years.
See where this is leading??
Anyway... All the best and Happy Xmas!!!

One of the best things I've ever read on this board.
I would agree as long as we can stave off the current old age issues (memory loss, loss of motor skills, etc) ... why WOULDN'T you want to live to
1000? I mean I would even take the physical deterioration. Just think about how much the human brain could accomplish if it was running at near-full
capacity with a few centuries of experience???
Maybe that's the key to solving many problems we face today ... figuring out how to live longer and keep our bodies and minds working like they do in
our 20s and 30s when we pass 100.

Limited resources are the cause of war. Until solidified, inexpensive space travel and survival has been invented, there will always be a battle for
power on Earth.

Let me just say Great Post ! Though I have some issues in regards to humans living that long, first and foremost from the above quote - money?
WTF?
If you were to live that long, why would you invest or worry about money? An average wage to get by would be plenty over the overextended lifespan -
but imagine the amount of knowledge you could aquire? either in many fields or even as a "Super Subject Expert" here on ATS?
You'd be like wise of YODA of Star Wars. LOL
Anyway, If it were possible, we would seriously and almost immediately have to bring in some sort of population control program until the point that
we go off and colonise other worlds, then this restriction can be lifted, for if it was not, the worlds population would literally explode and
there'd be more death, destruction and disease due to overcrowding.
As for exploring distant worlds, perfect. Have the astronauts in a suspended animation state with machines to regulate their health and vitals and
wake them up when near their destination.
I think it has something to do with stopping our cells from dying and not replacing themselves - if there were to constantly replace themselves then
we'd all be looking like 25 year olds at our peak for the couple hundred years we live.
I cant wait, hopefully they find something to fix my worn out back at the same time, Im sick of hard physical work.

Worse yet, imagine how long we'd have to be in school... the damn education systems would do anything to keep us paying for 500-600 years. Plus,
imagine how much prejudice there would be. All the elders would be so pissed off after the first 200 years... bleh.

I always thought that old age would first come after 930- 950 years of age.
The procces of old age would first begin after many many lifetimes we could say.
And one more thing is - I think the systems we live in today makes us old fairly quick - The system will need to be different if it has to come
naturally.
I believe that our system is based on a negative platform - that makes old age come faster that nessesary.
