Tottenham have emerged as front-runners to sign West Ham midfielder Michael Carrick.

Coach Jacques Santini is searching for a central midfield player and has seen moves for England internationals Danny Murphy and Owen Hargreaves fall through.

He has now turned to former England Under-21 star Carrick, who is in the last year of his contract at Upton Park.

A deal for Carrick could see Spurs defender Dean Richards moving in the other direction on loan for the season.

Carrick has been linked with Arsenal, Portsmouth, Everton, West Brom and Crystal Palace.

Hammers boss Alan Pardew has reportedly told Carrick to make up his mind up about a move or sign a long-term contract.

Tottenham have won the race to sign highly-rated West Ham midfielder Michael Carrick for an as yet undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old had been linked with Arsenal, Portsmouth, Everton, West Brom and Crystal Palace in recent weeks. But the twice-capped England international will sign a four-year deal once completing a medical at White Hart Lane.

The Hammers were aware that Carrick could have left the club on a free transfer next summer, but insisted he would have been offered a new deal had he chosen not to join Spurs. Carrick will now link up with former team-mates Freddie Kanoute and Jermain Defoe at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham's newest acquisition Michael Carrick has his eyes firmly focused on a place in Sven-Goran Eriksson's England squad after securing a dream move to White Hart Lane.

There were concerns the midfielder would struggle to pass Monday's medical, having had three operations on a persistent groin injury in the last 18 months.

However, the 23-year-old, who is Tottenham's second signing inside 24 hours after the capture of Noe Pamarot from French club Nice, passed with flying colours and has signed a four-year deal believed to be worth around 3million.

Yeah i'm pretty pissed that he finally went.

Carrick had spent his entire career from youth upwards at West Ham.
