Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has refused to be drawn on reports linking the club with a move for Manchester United's Alan Smith. Reports suggested that The Magpies were interested in mounting an end of season bid for the former Leeds United man. Newcastle were one of a number of clubs who made a bid last summer for Smith, who revealed that he shunned a move to Tyneside as well as Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Rangers. All Shepherd would say is that they did indeed make a move for him last summer.
