Shevchenko has been ruled out

Andrei Shevchenko has been ruled out of Milan's crucial UEFA Champions League clash with Manchester United next Wednesday.

The Ukraine striking star clashed heads with Simone Loria after just ten minutes of Milan's Serie A match against Cagliari on Saturday evening.

He was immediately withdrawn looking very groggy and with severe looking bumps to the side of his face.

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted he will put Ruud van Nistelrooy on the substitutes' bench for the UEFA Champions League tie with Milan.

Van Nistelrooy has not played for Manchester United since the end of November due to an Achilles problem.

The Holland ace has recovered from the injury and has been in full training for the past week.

Vice-president Adriano Galliani has declared that Milan must put aside Andrei Shevchenko's absence against Manchester United.

The Ballon D'Or winner will miss the UEFA Champions League tie due to a nasty facial injury, and the Milan official has challenged the team to prove they can succeed without their attacking talisman.

Shevchenko has claimed 17 goals for his side so far this term, and has been a consistently superb performer ever since his 1999 move from Dynamo Kiev.

Andrei Shevchenko is losing his race to be fit to face Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League next Tuesday.

The Ukrainian marksman missed Milan's first leg victory at Old Trafford after breaking his cheekbone in Serie A action the weekend before.

The Italian side were hoping to have him back for the return leg at San Siro but that now looks unlikely.

Jaap Stam should be available to face Manchester United, with the Milan defender hoping to make a speedy return from the injury that kept him out of the first leg.

Milan take a 1-0 advantage into the home leg of the UEFA Champions League match, and will be delighted that Stam should be fit to face his former side.

The giant Dutchman was missing for that victory and also the 1-0 win against Milan rivals Internazionale at the weekend.

Paolo Maldini has vowed that Milan will come out fighting against Manchester United to kill off their UEFA Champions League tie.

The Italian champions came away from Old Trafford with a 1-0 win in the first leg after some great attacking football.

Veteran stopper Maldini says that Sir Alex Ferguson's side can expect more of the same in the return leg at San Siro.
