Alan Smith has suffered an injury setback, but the Manchester United striker has vowed to make a swift return to action.

Smith has quickly established himself as a firm favourite of the Old Trafford faithful, but he has not featured since damaging his ankle against Chelsea in early January.

United initially suggested he would be back in action in a matter of days, but Smith's ankle has been slow to respond to treatment.

grumpy fergie admits hes suffered a set back

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Alan Smith has suffered a setback in his bid to return from an ankle injury.

The former Leeds United favourite misses the visit of Birmingham City on Saturday but there is better news regarding Ruud van Nistelrooy, who remains on course for the mouthwatering UEFA Champions League tie with Milan.

"Alan Smith has had a little setback," said Ferguson. "I think we rushed him back too quickly.
