Manchester United: Rooney Makes dream start!!!

Wayne Rooney lived up to his pre-match hype as he grabbed a superb hat-trick in Manchester United's 6-2 Champions League mauling of Fenerbahce.

Sir Alex Ferguson deliberated over whether to give his 27m new-boy a United debut in Europe's premier competition following his recovery from a foot injury suffered in Portugal.

And Rooney rewarded Ferguson's decision to start him alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, scoring three sublime goals as the hosts simply blew their Turkish opposition away.

Ryan Giggs got the ball rolling on seven minutes with a fine glancing header.

But Rooney then took centre stage with stunning strikes on 17 and 28 minutes.

Fenerbahce pulled a goal back on 47 through Ferreira Marcio Nabre.

But Rooney curled a 20-yard free-kicked over the visitors' wall on 54 minutes to make it 4-1. T uncay Sanli's low skidding shot beat Roy Carroll on the hour mark but United stepped up a gear and grabbed late goals through van Nistelrooy (78) and David Bellion (81).
