Trevor Sinclair has handed Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan a timely boost by returning to training after shaking off a knee injury.

The former England midfielder has started just twice this season after a string of injuries affected his pre-season, but first-team coach Derek Fazackerley is optimistic his problems are behind him.

"Trevor has been back out with the squad for the last couple of days and hopefully he is not far off now," Fazackerley told the club's official website.

City's midfield had already been decimated by injuries to Claudio Reyna and Joey Barton before Sun Jihai suffered a serious knee injury which is likely to rule him out for the remainder of the campaign in the 1-0 victory against Chelsea.

The absences mean Sinclair could be straight back in the squad for Sunday's trip to Newcastle United, despite not having played for six weeks.

Manchester City's Trevor Sinclair has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 31-year-old has suffered a fracture to the femur, as well as ligament damage.

Sinclair will have to be on crutches for three months, meaning he will not be able to regain his fitness before the end of the current season.

The England international played against Arsenal last month, one of just five appearances this season - but scans have now revealed the full extent of his problem.

Meanwhile, City defender Ben Thatcher faces a month out after undergoing an operation on his ankle complaint.
