Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes has revealed he "will go to Liverpool".

The 28-year-old has been out of favour at the Bernabeu and spent last season at French club Monaco.

Despite returning to the Bernabeu this season, the Spain international is down the pecking order behind Ronaldo, Raul and former Liverpool striker Michael Owen.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez is desperate to bolster his attack after summer signing Djibril Cisse broke a leg earlier this season.

"Yes, I am going to England - I have decided," Morientes said in comments reported on Liverpool's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv

"I will go to Liverpool and for many reasons. The main reason is the coach Rafa Benitez. He is Spanish and knows me perfectly, which is worth a lot for a professional.

"We have asked Real Madrid to make a fast solution and I don't want to expand any further, except to say I am already looking through the English dictionary."

The player's agent Gines Carvajal has admitted Morientes' future is now in the hands Madrid, who will need to agree a fee for the player.

lyon are supposed to have joined the chase

Lyon are believed to have entered the transfer chase for Real Madrid's Fernando Morientes.

The French champions are keen to bring the former Monaco loanee back to Ligue 1 although Newcastle United continue to be credited with an interest despite denials from Graeme Souness.

Although a defender is surely the priority for the Magpies boss, officials from Tyneside are reported to have travelled to Madrid on Thursday to discuss a deal.

Fernando Morientes could finally be on the verge of joining Liverpool with Real Madrid reportedly agreeing to a deal of around 7 million for the striker, along with goalkeeper Cesar.

Liverpool have reportedly upped their bid for Spanish international striker Morientes to around 6.5 million, and Real have finally agreed to allow him to leave.

New Real coach Wanderley Luxemburgo had dismissed the chance of Morientes moving to Anfield, but it now seems as though they have accepted his departure as they cannot guarantee him regular first team action.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez has now also turned his attention to Real's reserve goalkeeper Cesar, and he will be involved in the deal totalling around 7 million.

Real Madrid have confirmed they have agreed a 6.3 million deal with Liverpool for Fernando Morientes.

The move has turned into a hugely protracted affair after weeks of speculation, but the transfer should now go through in the very near future.
