Dan Donegan (Disturbed - my personal fave)
Eric Braunn (Iron Butterfly - did things with guitar that were simply amazing)
Kirk Hammett (Metallica - nuff said)
Dave Mustaine (Megadeth - too bad he didn't get along with the boys in Metallica enough to stay)
Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society - OZZY)
Joe Satriani
SRV
Hendrix

Though my personal favorite is Kirk Hammett.

The rifts he plays are amazing. And he was a student of one of the best, Joe Satriani.

Jimmi Hendrix

Who else?

As far as raw technical skill and talent. As crayon pointed out, it has to be Yngwie Johann Malmsteen. Really in a class of his own.

If you get a chance try to get your hands on a DVD of the concert he did with the New Japan Philharmonic.

Beyond that I'd probably go for Joe Satriani. Maybe James Murphy also.

I don't know who is the best but I think that Brian May deserves a mention

My favourite guitar player would have to be Jimmy Page. I think Jimmy Marr from the 'Smiths' is good too.

Rynaldo

I loved Stevie Ray Vaughn and thinks he sounds as fresh and immediate today as he did. He and Clapton are both the same in that respect... something from years ago still has the vibrance today that it had when it was first laid down. Hendrix and Slash both have that "double handful" sound I love. John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers is unreal, very funky. Always liked Brian May, very clean. Very melodic.

But for tops, I'd have to give it to SRV. I saw a tape of him, "Live at the El Mogambo" (sp?) as well as on Austin City Limits. To' up from the flo' up!

Eddie VanHalen....whether you like vanhalen or not, Eddie can do some great things with a guitar.

I used to go to different festivals and there are some great guitarists at these so called hippie events that would put shame on some of the best well known guitarists.

Adam Jones from TOOL
Jim Martin - Faith No More
Stephan Carpenter - Deftones

Real late at night, there is an infomercial on featuring this crazy elf looking guy named Esteban and his product "Gift of Guitar", which is basically a video teaching you how to play easy songs. He plays mostly Spanish and classical, and it's really incredible to watch and listen to him play.

Frank Zappa is another talented guitarist, even though he has silly songs.
