Hugo Viana's future is expected to be resolved later this week.
The Portuguese international is currently on a season-long loan deal at Sporting Lisbon, following his ill-fated switch to Newcastle. Viana moved to Tyneside in the summer of 2002 for 8.5 million and soon after he was named Young European Player of the Year. However, things did not work out for Viana and he failed to win a regular starting role and he finally ended his English nightmare last summer.

Viana was never given a chance to prove himself. If i was souness id want him back, even if only for a few weeks to see if he's progressed any since leaving on loan. But saying that, id always pick super Robert over Viana anyway so he would just get bored sitting on the bench!!!

Viana was meant to be a huge talent wasn't he?

As for Robert, he went through a right bad spell and nearly got the boot. Seems to be playing much better football now..

yer vianna was supposed to be very promising, i think he cost like 8.5 million for him and what is he, in his teens when he signed?

robert does seem to be doing better, though, does he defend yet?

Roberts playing better than Beckham this season, and his free kicks have been unbelievable. (and he's scored more of them than beckham!

Beckham? who is he?

You can't compare Beckham to Robert. Beckham has to be one of the most overated players ever. Robert is a good player but not nothing to get real excited about.

Ahh c'mon you don't see it?

He is paceless, his passing for England in recent times has been attrocious. Since that foot injury he has never been the same, you don't see him charging around the pitch like a nutter anymore. He has adjusted his game due to his lack of pace ect and he is less effective.. I guess the only thing he really had going for him was his freekicks. Fergie got the best out of him at Man United...

I agree he hasnt been at his best but bring him home to England and he'll shine once more. The pace in Spain is too much for him now.
Fergie did get the best out of him but its also took Fergie a long time to put the team back together after his departure. (Van Nistelrooy is nothing without Beckham)

And we're gonna beat them in the semi's (Fingers and toes crossed)

Hehe yeah i would like to see them get beat..

Nistlerooy - Horse Face, well who would have thought that Fergie would consider dropping him? Something has definatly gone wrong with him in recent times, that last injury he got seems to have done him in a bit. When they bought him he had dodgy knees and it was touch and go if they signed him. I think he is done for the season now and it remains to be seen if he can come back as good. The injurys may have taken their toll on him and it looks like Rooney is no1 choice now.

Is the rumour true that Newcastle may want to take back Bernard?

I hope so!

With Babayaro pretending he's injured we only have Hughes as a proper left back, but hughes has been amazing at centre back lately and thats why he's probably playing at the back 2nite with o'brien on the left!

If Bernard came back it would give us much more options! I dont even know why we let him go. He was one of our most consistent players.

Yeah it was a strange one letting Bernard go. I remeber when we tried to sign him (West Ham).. Maybe if we had got him and a couple of other defenders then we might not have gone down lol!

What was you saying about Babayaro!

Celestine Babayaro may have to undergo an operation in a bid to cure his mystery knee complaint. The stopper has made just eight appearances for Newcastle United since signing from Chelsea in January, and will miss Thursday's Uefa Cup quarter final first leg against Sporting. Specialists have been unable to ascertain the cause of the 26-year-old's pain, and now Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has admitted that he may have to go under the knife if the situation does not improve.

There is no pain, thats why we need Bernard back!
What is it with us selling players then trying to buy them back? (Bernard and Solano)

A very good result for them.. Sporting played good football but had no-end result. There passing was pretty slick but Newcastle battled hard.

I see Dyer played and Bowyer was on the bench. Anyone think Bowyer should have come on as sub? What about Dyer no-one think he is just as bad or is he the innocent party?

Notice Bowyer came on to replace Dyer and not play alongside???
Not ready to take that step yet i think!

I think that this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion and there should be no talk of either leaving or being sacked.

Dyer was totally innocent and took 5 punches and one headbutt before retalliating so should not have even been red carded. His ban should have been retracted.

And Bowyer should have been red carded, banned for ONE match, club fine and slapped wrist!

We need both Dyer and Bowyer as they are an integral part of our team and we cannot afford to lose them just because the press kicked up a fuss over nothing!

I wouldn't call it nothing, it was a disgrace. What about all the young fans who was watching? Not exactly a great example of what Football is all about. With the racist slurs in the news, hooligans rearing their ugly heads again and the general behavour of some football players lately it couldn't have happened at a worse time.

Bowyer should be banned for a long time to be honest, if that happened on the street he would have been nicked for GBH. If he gets away with it other than the three match ban for the red, previous yellow cards and a fine he should count himself vey lucky indeed.

I do agree though that Newcastle shouldn't sack him or even Dyer. Both have been playing really well, esp Bowyer who didn't exactly set the world alight when he first went to Newcastle.

Fair point on Bowyer!

Bowyer has only just started showing the sort of form that he showed at leeds.
I thought he'd calmed down aswell but we'll just have to see if that was a one off incident.
He was in the paper 2day saying he would die for Newcastle and he wants to end his career here. I wish all our players showed loyalty like that!

It looks like Bowyer and Dyer may have had troubles before this incident. If they can sort out their differences, then yeah Newcastle should keep Bowyer just on his form alone.

One big problem is that he has to be on his best behaviour and he isn't exactly a saint. If he messes up again no other club would touch him with a bargepole and it could finish his career...
