Andy O'Brien has ended speculation over his future by signing a new deal with Newcastle. The Republic of Ireland's future at Newcastle had been in doubt after the recent arrival of Jean-Alain Boumsong from Rangers. Aston Villa had expressed an interest in the former Bradford star, but Newcastle have moved to tie him down to a new long-term contract at St James' Park. Newcastle boss Graeme Souness was delighted that O'Brien had pledged his future to the club.

Yeah it looked on the cards he was going. I think he is pretty good and they did well to keep him.

after siging the contract, hes determined to get in the team

Republic of Ireland and Newcastle centre back Andy O'Brien is determined to fight for his place for both club and country.

The former Bradford city man faces stiff competition for his place at the heart of the Irish defence from players like Manchester City's Richard Dunne and the £8 million purchase of Jean-Alain Boumsong from Rangers has pushed him down the pecking order at St James' Park.

Aston Villa were thought to be interested in signing O'Brien in the January transfer window but the Irishman has opted to stay on Tyneside and work hard to gain a regular first team spot.
