Newcastle United are in advanced talks with Bayern Munich defender Samuel Kuffour.

Toon boss Graeme Souness has made no secret of his desire to bolster his defensive ranks and has now pencilled in a role for the Ghana international.

Kuffour has excelled for Bayern over the past couple of seasons but has been subjected to criticism from his manager Felix Magath this term.

The German giants have endured an indifferent campaign thus far and Kuffour could well now decide the time is right for a fresh challenge.

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness is close to further adding to a burgeoning collection of new defenders, in the form of Samuel Kuffour.

It was revealed on Friday that the Toon were in advanced negotiations with Bayern Munich, and now Kuffour's agent has confirmed that the 28-year-old is keen on a move to the Premiership.

The Ghanaian international has been a consistent performer for the Bundesliga side since joining as a 17-year-old in 1993, although he has seen his value to the squad plummet under new boss Felix Magath.

Kuffour is out of contract in the summer and Bayern would be keen to cash in now rather than lose the player on a Bosman in June.

Bayern Munich have confirmed they are considering an offer from Newcastle United for Samuel Kuffour.

The Ghanaian defender has emerged as the latest transfer target for Magpies boss Graeme Souness, who is anxious to strengthen his rearguard.

Souness has already brought in France international Jean-Alain Boumsong from Rangers and has failed with a bid for Manchester City captain Sylvain Distin.

He is also aiming to strike a deal for Kuffour, who is out of contract with German giants Bayern at the end of the season.

Kuffour's agent has intimated the African is willing to move to The Premiership and feels Bayern will accept a nominal fee for the centre half now, rather than receive nothing in the summer.

Bayern are currently at a winter training camp in Dubai, where they acknowledged Newcastle's offer is on the table.

But Bayern's general manager Uli Hoeness has revealed the club will not accept any offers for Kuffour, until they are instructed that the player wants to leave the Bavarian side.

"Only then [when Kuffour tells us he wants to leave], will we talk about it," said Hoeness.

"We do not send anybody away."
