Graeme Souness is reported to have offered Lee Bowyer to Fulham as a makeweight in a bid to bring Luis Boa Morte to Newcastle.

The 27-year-old Portugal international is back in the Cottagers team after an injury lay-off and starred in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on New Year's Day.

And even though Bowyer has been one of the Magpies' better players in their recent poor run, The Daily Star claims Souness is prepared to part with him as he has a surfeit of midfielders.

The Toon boss is also said to be closing on the services of Boa Morte's international team-mate Jorge Andrade.

The Deportivo La Coruna defender has been offered a new four-year deal at The Riazor but the lure of the Premiership may convince him to move to Tyneside.

Other reports suggest Souness has earmarked Portsmouth striker Yakubu as his number one transfer target, but Pompey value the 10-goal hot-shot at 12million and Newcastle are prepared to pay only half that amount.

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has confirmed his interest in signing Fulham star Luis Boa Morte.

Souness has already been busy during the transfer window having captured Jean-Alain Boumsong and Celestine Babayaro, and is keen to further revamp his squad.

He was linked with a 2 million move for Boa Morte last week which prompted an angry response from Fulham boss Chris Coleman who insisted the Portuguese star was not for sale, and branded the proposed price-tag as 'an insult'.

The winger has only recently returned to action following injury, but has quickly rediscovered something like his best form.

Fulham attacker Luis Boa Morte admits he would relish a move to Newcastle United.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness has confirmed he is keen to lure the Portugal international to St James' Park during January's transfer window.

His Fulham counterpart Chris Coleman has brushed off the interest and feels the reported offer of 2 million for Boa Morte is derisory.

But Coleman may have to soften his stance, after Boa Morte acknowledged he is flattered that Newcastle want to sign him.
