newcastle keeper shay given looks set to stay at st james

"There is absolutely no chance of Shay Given leaving St James' Park and nobody has contacted us about him," said Shepherd.

"He is not for sale and that's the end of the story."

Given also distanced himself from the reports.

"I am baffled by these reports because I have not spoken to anyone," he said.

"I am as frustrated as anyone by our lack of success but I want to stay and win things with Newcastle.

Given has been a good goalkeeper over the years at Newcastle and they would be mad to let him go as decent goalkeepers are a bit on the scarce side at the moment...

manager souness comes out and says i dont want him to leave

'He (Given) came to see me and Shay was deeply concerned as to what appeared in the newspapers and was mystified as to where they had originated,'' stressed Souness.

''He actually asked the question: 'Is it not the club trying to get rid of me?'

''I assured him it's not the case. We would not like to see Shay go, as he is one of the best keepers around and I understand he loves it at this football club and the supporters love him.

''From my point of view, I want him here because he is a top class keeper.''
