Newcastle are ready to rekindle their interest in Tottenham full back Stephen Carr after seeing a move for Benfica's Miguel stall.

Magpies boss Sir bobby Robson has made significant strides in the transfer market this summer after luring Patrick Kluivert, James Milner and Nicky Butt to St James' Park.

However, he still wants to add a quality right back to his ranks but has been frustrated in his pursuit of both Miguel and Ajax star Hatem Trabelsi.

Benfica have refused to part with Portugal international Miguel with their UEFA Champions League campaign in mind, while Trabelsi appears likely to finalise a move to Arsenal in the coming weeks.

Carr has been a long-term target of Robson and has just one year left on his deal at White Hart lane.

The Republic of Ireland international has resisted attempts to make him sign an extension but Spurs are determined not to see him leave on the cheap.

This would be a great signing if they manage to pull it off. Carr is one of Tottenhams best player and i can't see them letting him go without a fight. Also Newcastle would have to play alot of money for him and other clubs would be in for him like a shot if they was willing to let him go.

It looks like they may well do as Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Tottenham Hotspur for their Irish full back Stephen Carr.

This is a bit of a shock but the bid must have been pretty high.

The Republic of Ireland star is now in talks with Newcastle and should seal a deal in the next 48 hours. The Magpies have been looking for a new right back all summer and they have now struck a deal for Carr.

Looks like they are going to get him....

Newcastle completed the signing of Stephen Carr from Tottenham on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland right-back, capped 30 times by his country, has agreed a four-year contract with the Magpies and joins for a fee of 2million.

Carr becomes the fourth signing of the summer for toon boss Sir Bobby Robson after the captures of Patrick Kluivert, James Milner and Nicky Butt.

Robson's main task at the moment however is to get a team together for Saturday's Premiership opener against Middlesbrough with an outbreak of conjunctivitis swept through his squad.

The Premier League are closely monitoring the health scare which could result in the postponement of the fixture.
