Teddy Sheringham helped himself to a hat-trick as Portsmouth returned to the top of the Barclaycard Premiership with a resounding 4-0 win over Bolton at Fratton Park .

Last season's Nationwide League champions have started life back in the top flight with some aplomb, securing an opening-day win over Aston Villa and a creditable 1-1 draw at Manchester City, where they had lead until the final minute.

It took Pompey a while to get going tonight, Steve Stone (48) setting them on their way when Jussi Jaaskelainen could only deflect Patrik Berger's drive into the path of the former England midfielder.

Portsmouth have signed Chelsea midfielder Alexei Smertin on loan for the remainder of the Barclaycard Premiership season.

Russian international Smertin, who joined the Stamford Bridge club for 3.5million from Bordeaux, will complete his season-long loan move to Fratton Park if he obtains a work permit.

The 28-year-old was bought by Chelsea as an 'investment for the future' and was not expected to get into the first team straight away.

Portsmouth are hoping to sign Charlton full-back Paul Konchesky before the transfer window closes on Sunday night.

Pompey have made an excellent start to life in the Barclaycard Premiership but are determined to strengthen their squad for the months to come.

They signed Alexei Smertin on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea earlier this week and Konchesky - who requested a transfer from The Valley over the summer - is their latest target.

Portsmouth have snatched two players from under the noses of their Premiership rivals on transfer deadline day.

First Harry Redknapp swooped to secure the services of Czech Republic goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek ahead of Wolves.

And he followed that move up by beating fellow top-flight new-boys Leicester - and Wigan - to snap up West Brom striker Jason Roberts on loan.

Former Newcastle goalkeeper had been training with Wolves and they were widely tipped to sign him from Brescia.

However, Harry Redknapp made his move and the keeper signed after meeting with chief executive Peter Storrie.

Portsmouth are hopeful that striker Svetoslav Todorov will make a full recovery after undergoing surgery on his knee ligament injury in America.

The Bulgarian was operated on by specialists at the Steadman Clinic in Colorado, and Pompey physio Gary Sadler reported that the surgery went "very well".

Todorov broke down in a training incident last month, and is expected to miss the majority of the season.

Portsmouth are unsure of the full extent of the injury suffered by on-loan Russian star Alexei Smertin after he flew home early ahead of his country's crucial Euro 2004 qualifier against Georgia this weekend.

Smertin - whom Chelsea signed for 3.45million but immediately despatched to the South Coast for a season-long loan with Pompey - had to exit Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by Charlton after only 26 minutes.

The problem looked to be a knee injury and manager Harry Redknapp admitted after the game: "It seems a bad one. He couldn't carry on and it is a blow because he's a quality player for us."

But as Portsmouth physiotherapist Gary Sadler and his medical team waited to fully assess the midfielder's injury today, it was discovered that the 28-year-old had already taken a flight to Moscow.

On a good note..

Nice to see Berger playing again at the weekend....

Portsmouth unveiled plans for the expansion and re-orientation of their Fratton Park ground.

The capacity of the stadium will ultimately rise to 35,000 while the pitch will be rotated to a north-south orientation.

The redevelopment will take place in four phases, with the first and second taking the capacity to 28,000 and an extra 7,000 seats being added in the latter section.
