Middlesbrough are understood to have made a bid to lure Geremi back to The Riverside.

The Cameroon midfielder had a very successful stint on Teesside in 2002 before he opted he joined Chelsea from Real Madrid.

Geremi was a big signing for Claudio Ranieri — costing £7 million and he featured heavily last term.

However, since Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the club — Geremi has sunk down the pecking order and has started just two Premiership games this season.

The arrival of Czech Republic midfielder Jiri Jarosik could ease the way for one of Chelsea's midfielders to leave and both Geremi and Scott Parker, who is currently injured, look the most likely to be given permission to depart.

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren has abandoned his efforts to lure Chelsea midfielder Geremi back to the Riverside Stadium after failing with three approaches in the last few weeks.

McClaren hoped that the Cameroon international, who spent a successful loan spell on Teesside during the 2002-03 season before securing a 7m move to Chelsea from Real Madrid, might be the answer to his problems on the right side of midfield in the wake of Gaizka Mendieta's season-ending knee injury.

However, despite his recent lack of first-team opportunities, Blues boss Jose Mourinho was not prepared to let the 26-year-old leave either on a temporary or permanent basis despite the player's indication that he would welcome a return to the north east.
