Middlesbrough are eyeing a move for Newcastle duo Steve Harper and Gary Speed.

The Teessiders want quality cover in central midfield and are hoping to persuade Speed to leave St James' Park if Manchester United's Nicky Butt arrives to steal his regular first-team place.

Speed has also been strongly linked with Fulham, but it is not known whether the Cottagers can match the Welsh international skipper's current wages.

Meanwhile, Newcastle's No 2 goalkeeper Harper is ready to move on after several years spent as understudy to Magpies' first choice Shay Given.

Harper was offered to Benfica as bait in a mooted part-exchange deal for Portugal defender Miguel.

But with that move having fallen down, the 29-year-old is ready to join a Premiership club.

Mark Viduka has joined the Leeds United exodus by completing a a 4.5million move to Middlesbrough.

The 28-year-old Australia striker, who has signed a three-year deal, was unveiled at a Boro press conference.

Viduka, signed by Leeds from Celtic for 7million in June 2000, passed a medical last Friday and has since been negotiating a settlement on his Leeds contract.

Boro boss Steve McClaren will be hoping that in Viduka he has finally captured a forward who will deliver a regular supply of goals.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has undergone a medical on Teesside as Middlesbrough look to tie up a deal for the Dutch star.

The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer after cancelling the last year of his contract by mutual consent.

Yeah good signing for them but...Viduka and Hasslebaink can both be very lazy up front if things are not going their way. Do you need two players like that in the side? But when they are both on form they will make a fantastic partnership.

Big spending Middlesbrough are considering a move for former loan star Geremi.

The Cameroonian spent a season on loan at The Riverside in 2002 and he established himself as a firm fans favourite.

The following summer, Boro attempted to buy him permanently from Real Madrid - but Chelsea beat them to the signing.

Geremi failed to establish himself in the starting line-up under Claudio Ranieri and now with Jose Mourinho taking charge at Stamford Bridge - he looks even less likely to command a first team place.

Juninho's love affair with Middlesbrough could be drawing to a close as Steve McClaren ups the stakes in the hunt for further success.

McClaren signalled his intention to go for goals once the new campaign gets under way by signing strikers Mark Viduka and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in the space of two days last week.

Boro chief executive Keith Lamb insisted there were no plans to offload any of the remaining four frontmen - Michael Ricketts is no longer at the club - as a result, although it seems likely that one or more may go.

Joseph Job's position is secure after he signed a new two-year deal while Malcolm Christie remains in the manager's thinking despite his injury woes.

Record signing Massimo Maccarone and Slovakian Szilard Nemeth are perhaps more vulnerable, while Juninho too could find himself surplus to requirements.

Thye are spending quite a lot of cash and it doesn't look like it is going to stop yet. They did it befire and didn't do to well but this time they have bought some decent players. They could finish top ten next season.

Middlesbrough face a major financial hurdle in any attempt to sign Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour.

The Romford-born former England international, now 31, is overdue a testimonial match at Highbury which could net him around 750,000 and it may well take place at the end of the coming season.

That means Parlour looks sure to stay with the Premiership champions for at least one more campaign even though big-spending Boro chairman Steve Gibson could offer a generous salary package at The Riverside.

Middlesbrough's attempts to sign former loan star Geremi look doomed, with the Cameroon international set to stay at Chelsea.

Boro had been expected to clinch a one-year loan deal for the midfielder, who spent the 2002/03 season at The Riverside.

But Geremi has decided to remain at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place under new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

They were lacking finishers last season and with the two strikers they've brought in they're certainly looking to be one of the surprise packages. If they can bring in one or two creative midfielders I'd tip them for a European spot.

Looks like the deal may be back on as Middlesbrough today confirmed they have made an approach for Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour after missing out on Geremi.

It is understood the 31-year-old England international has been offered a lucrative deal to move north after talks to bring Geremi back to the Riverside Stadium stalled.

Boudewijn Zenden has joined Middlesbrough on a free transfer from Chelsea.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at the Riverside and becomes manager Steve McClaren's fifth signing of the summer.

Zenden, who has signed a one-year deal with Boro, was given permission to travel to Germany for a pre-season tour with his new club.

Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren has confirmed that Brazilian star Juninho has held talks with Celtic.

Parkhead boss Martin O'Neill has been alerted to Juninho's possible availability after the player found himself pushed to the sidelines by the arrival of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka.

On-loan striker Henri Camara has been the only new face at Celtic since the departures of Henrik Larsson, Johan Mjallby, Liam Miller and Jamie Smith but Juninho would be the high-profile signing that the supporters are hoping for.

Middlesbrough captain Gareth Southgate has committed himself to the Teessiders by signing a two-year contract extension which will almost certainly see him end his career at the Riverside.

The 33-year-old England international signed to complete another good week for Boro boss Steve McClaren following the summer acquisitions of Michael Reiziger, Mark Viduka, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Ray Parlour and Bolo Zenden.

Southgate, McClaren's first signing after replacing Bryan Robson in 2001, has been excellent value for his £6.5million price tag, and having got his hands on the Carling Cup - the club's first-ever major trophy - last season, is hungry for more success.
