Middlesbrough are eyeing a move for Newcastle duo Steve Harper and Gary Speed.

The Teessiders want quality cover in central midfield and are hoping to persuade Speed to leave St James' Park if Manchester United's Nicky Butt arrives to steal his regular first-team place.

Speed has also been strongly linked with Fulham, but it is not known whether the Cottagers can match the Welsh international skipper's current wages.

Meanwhile, Newcastle's No 2 goalkeeper Harper is ready to move on after several years spent as understudy to Magpies' first choice Shay Given.

Harper was offered to Benfica as bait in a mooted part-exchange deal for Portugal defender Miguel.

But with that move having fallen down, the 29-year-old is ready to join a Premiership club.

Mark Viduka has joined the Leeds United exodus by completing a a 4.5million move to Middlesbrough.

The 28-year-old Australia striker, who has signed a three-year deal, was unveiled at a Boro press conference.

Viduka, signed by Leeds from Celtic for 7million in June 2000, passed a medical last Friday and has since been negotiating a settlement on his Leeds contract.

Boro boss Steve McClaren will be hoping that in Viduka he has finally captured a forward who will deliver a regular supply of goals.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has undergone a medical on Teesside as Middlesbrough look to tie up a deal for the Dutch star.

The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer after cancelling the last year of his contract by mutual consent.
