Fabien Barthez has been accused of spitting at a referee and, if found guilty, could be banned for a lengthy period by the authorities. Moroccan
referee Abdellah El Achiri has told his country's footballing federation that the Marseille keeper spat in his face during l'OM's friendly with
Wydad.
The Casablanca clash boiled over when El Achiri sent off French defender Frederic Dehu which sparked a free-for-all. Barthez, who was actually on the
bench, stormed onto the pitch to jostle the referee and that is when the spitting incident is alleged to have taken place. If the Moroccan authorities
pass the case on to Fifa, a long suspension would be on the cards for the former Manchester United number one.
