Belgian soccer champion Anderlecht sacked coach Hugo Broos overnight following disappointing results this season. Broos, who was in his third year at
the Brussels club, has been replaced as coach by Franky Vercauteren, his former assistant.
In a statement Anderlecht said it "regretted" having to relieve Broos of his duties but hoped the move would help the team "to reach the objectives
that we have".
Anderlecht won the league title last season but failed to earn a point in this season's group phase of the Champions League and was eliminated from
the Belgian Cup in the round of 16 by Racing Genk. It lies 14 points adrift of leader Club Bruges in the Belgian first division but with two games in
hand.
