Demetrio Albertini is negotiating his release from Atalanta to secure a move to Barcelona. Atalanta were initially insistent that the experienced midfielder would not be leaving, but appear to have had their hand forced by Albertini's desire to move to Spain.

The 33-year-old's agent met with Atalanta officials on Friday to try and reach an agreement to allow him to quit the Serie A strugglers. Albertini is understood to be prepared to write off certain payments he is due to clinch the move. Barca are hopeful that a deal will soon be struck, and believe the transfer could be completed by Monday.

Atalanta and Barcelona are at loggerheads over Demetrio Albertini's anticipated move to Camp Nou.

Albertini is wanted by the Spanish giants to solve their crisis in the centre of midfield, an area which has been ravaged by several long-term injuries.

Barcelona want the experienced former Italy international until the end of the season and claim he has negotiated the cancellation of his contract with Atalanta.

nearly done

Demetrio Albertini has only to pass a medical to become a Barcelona player after securing his release from Atalanta.

The 33-year-old midfielder flew into Spain on Monday night after Atalanta finally relented to his desire to join the Catalan club.

Albertini underwent a stringent medical on Tuesday, and if, as expected, he comes through that without problems he should be presented as a Barca player on Wednesday.
