European: Smith handed England start

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has handed Manchester United striker Alan Smith a place in the starting line-up for the friendly against Ukraine.

The Swede has chosen Smith ahead of Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, who had been tipped to replace the injured Emile Heskey in Wednesday's match.

"I hope when the fans see the team they like it and are curious about how we will play," said Eriksson.

Nicky Butt is recalled to the midfield and Ledley King partners John Terry.

Although under Fifa rules England can only make six substitutions, Eriksson is looking forward to seeing more of his squad in action.
