Birmingham City are stepping up their efforts to bring Chelsea striker Mikael Forssell back to St Andrews. Blues have called a press conference for Friday afternoon at which they are hoping to unveil a major signing - believed to be Forssell. Finnish international Forssell looked all set to join Everton in a 4.5m deal but the move collapsed after the Merseyside club expressed concern over his long-term knee problem.

City managing director Karren Brady was attempting to thrash out a compromise package with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon. The Premier League champions are keen for a straight cash deal for Forssell but Birmingham would prefer a pay-as-you-play agreement or to take him on another loan.

hehe.. good man TRD, you where right

Birmingham have signed Chelsea's Mikael Forssell in a £3m deal.

Boss Steve Bruce swooped after Everton pulled out of a deal amid reported concerns about the 24-year-old's Finnish striker's recent knee injury.

But Forssell has passed a medical and completed his return to the club where he was a major success on loan in 2003/4, when he scored 19 goals.

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce said he was delighted to have beaten off competition to sign Mikael Forssell.

The 24-year-old Finnish striker completed his £3m move from Chelsea to Birmingham on Friday.

Bruce said: "Mikael has always been my number one target. I am delighted that we have got him here.

He failed the medical so the club cannot take out an insurance policy on him, that's why Everton never signed him.
