Southampton have added the capture of Olivier Bernard to the earlier signing of Henri Camara. Striker Camara was brought in to St Mary's from Wolves to bolster their forward line and he has been followed to the South Coast by Bernard who will be charged with the task of shoring up Harry Redknapp's defence.

French full back Bernard has signed a deal until the end of the season, after which he will become a free agent. Bernard was due to be out of contract at St James' Park at the end of the season, but The Magpies have cancelled his contract by mutual consent.

Harry wanted Bernard at West Ham when he was there. I think he is a decent player and is good getting forward aswell. I read ol Harry reckons they have a good enough team now to beat the drop...

well. bernard hopes to go back 1 day

Olivier Bernard claims he has not given up hope of playing for Newcastle again, despite moving to Southampton on transfer deadline day.

The French full back claims he opted to sign for Saints after Magpies chief Graeme Souness told him he would be forced to play second fiddle to Celestine Babayaro.

Bernard's deal with Newcastle was due to expire in the summer so he severed his ties with The Magpies on Monday and penned a five-month contract with Saints.
