Finnish side FC Lahti have accepted a request from Birmingham City to take striker Njazi Kuqi on trial. The 21-year-old is likely to head to St Andrew's in the near future, although club president Jussi Lumio said: "There's a long way to go before he signs for Birmingham.

"After the trial we will know more. We have already negotiated with Birmingham about a transfer fee.

"Let's see how the trial goes. If Birmingham are still keen on him after that things can be sorted out very quickly.

"At the moment Birmingham are closest and we want to check this out first. Kuqi also wants to go to Birmingham."

Finnish Under-21 international Kuqi is the younger brother of Ipswich Town striker Shefki Kuqi and is also reported to be a target for Manchester City.

looks like the player is going to sign

Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce believes he is on the verge of completing a deal for Finnish striker Njazi Kuqi in the next few days.

The Finland Under-21 international has clearly impressed the coaching staff at St Andrews whilst on trial and is now close to completing a 250,000 switch.

Birmingham have completed the signing of Finland Under-21 striker Njazi Kuqi.

City agreed a deal for around 400,000 with FC Lahti for the player earlier this season and he has signed a two-and-a-half year deal.

The 21-year-old brother of Ipswich forward Shefki has been training under manager Steve Bruce for more than a month after initially coming to England on trial.

Blues will have to wait until international clearance is received before Kuqi is allowed to make his debut, and expect to get the all-clear next week.

Kuqi will wear the number 14 shirt, vacated by Stern John who moved to Coventry earlier this season.

Youngster Neil Kilkenny has had his loan at Oldham extended until the end of the season.
