Gary Doherty has been warned that he must get himself fit if he wants to force his way back into Norwich City's first team.

The Republic of Ireland international has not been able to get a game in his favoured centre-back role since arriving at Carrow Road from Tottenham in August, but did have a brief run in the team up front.

However, a drop in form saw him lose that role to Leon McKenzie and he has not featured in the last two Premiership games.

The 24-year-old completed 90 minutes at centre-back for the Canaries' reserve team on Wednesday, but manager Nigel Worthington still does not believe he is fit enough to challenge Craig Fleming or Simon Charlton for a starting place.

"What we need to do with Gary is get him fit," Worthington told the club's official website.

"He's come in and his fitness levels are not Norwich City. He needs to address that.

"He's had a little injury but he played a full 90 minutes for the reserves the other night which was good.

"Now he's got a programme of work that will be carried on in the near future to get him up to our levels."

Doherty has scored once in six matches since joining the Canaries.
