West Brom defender Darren Purse has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association following his red card in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Newcastle.

The charge relates to an incident in the first half when team-mate Riccardo Scimeca needed treatment.

Purse was having his shirt pulled by a Newcastle player and in an effort to break free accidentally caught ex-Villa defender Scimeca in the face with his arm.

The Baggies skipper was harshly sent off later in the St James' Park clash for a second bookable offence and will serve a one-match ban against Bolton on Saturday.

But he could now face a further three-game suspension if the FA find him guilty of the new offence at a Soho Square hearing on Thursday.

I thought he deserved the ban, the intent was there. OK he missed and hit his own player but that wasn't who he was going for.

The first yellow was harsh, but the second was a joke. That didn't deserve a sending off.
